Steelmakers lead decline in Asian metal shares

KONG (MarketWatch) -- Steelmakers such as Posco and Angang Steel Co.
led Asian metals and mining shares lower Monday, on reports Japan's
Nippon Steel Corp. was expected to further cut production and ahead of
likely weak earnings from Alcoa Inc.
Steel shares were particularly weak as regional markets retreated
Monday, after a pre-weekend decline on Wall Street.
Shares of Posco (PKX:
PKX,,) dropped 3.3% and Hyundai Steel Co.

) gave up 2.7% in Seoul trading, while Bluescope Steel (AU:BSL:news,chart,profile)

BLSFF,,) shrank 2.3% in Sydney.

Shares of Baoshan Iron & Steel Co. fell 0.8% and Wuhan Iron &
Steel Co. lost 1.1% in Shanghai, while Angang Steel Co. (HK:347:news,chart,profile)
slid 3.1% in Hong Kong and 2.2% in Shenzhen.
Japanese markets were closed for a holiday.
The decline in steel shares came after Reuters reported Nippon Steel (JP:5401:news,chart,profile) (NISTY:
NISTY,,) was likely to cut production because of weak demand and pressure for price cuts from its automaker clients.

"We have said two million tons, but it probably won't stop there,"
Nippon Steel chairman Akio Mimura said, referring to the company's
previous plan to cut production during the fiscal second half ending
March 31, according to the report.
The drop in Posco shares came in spite of reports in Japanese media that Toyota Motor Corp. (TM:

had decided to buy steel from the South Korean steelmaker to cut costs.
The move that was expected to hurt Toyota's Japanese suppliers such as
Nippon Steel and JFE Holdings (JP:5411:news,chart,profile) (JFEEY:

Nonferrous metals stocks and miners also declined across the region, on
worries about falling global demand and ahead of quarterly earnings
report from Alcoa Inc. (AA:
AA 26.35,+14.99,+132.0%)
later Monday. The aluminum giant is expected to have lost 7 cents a
share in the fourth quarter, down from a profit of 36 cents a share in
the year-earlier period.
